Prenatal and Infant Care Luncheon: Navigating Childcare Resources

On March 20, the Prenatal and Infant Care Network hosted a luncheon at the University of Saint Francis, featuring community experts discussing childcare resources, challenges, and opportunities in Allen County. Community professionals gathered to learn, network, and explore solutions for enhancing childcare access.

Allie Sutherland, Executive Director of the Northeast Indiana Early Childhood Coalition, highlighted Indiana’s severe childcare shortage, particularly for infants and toddlers. The financial impact on families is significant, with annual costs averaging $12,000 for infant care and $9,000 for preschool care, often exceeding mortgage payments. Providers face staffing shortages and funding gaps, worsening the crisis.

Lesa Cassel, Brightpoint’s Family Support Services Manager, provided insights into the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), detailing eligibility requirements and available resources for families seeking financial assistance. Brightpoint is the eligibility-determining agency for CCDF vouchers and assists families with the application process.

Bonnie Doolittle, Founder and Executive Director of New Mercies Ministries, presented the agency’s Day Hosting program—an innovative approach to addressing childcare crises. This program provides immediate, short-term care for families facing emergencies, helping them stabilize during critical times. Host families undergo rigorous screening, including comprehensive background checks, reference checks, and policy agreements. The process involves extensive documentation, training, home evaluations, and a two-month waiting period before approval, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children.

The luncheon concluded with a speaker panel Q&A session that explored community resources and collaborative strategies. Attendees gained valuable insights into navigating Allen County’s childcare landscape while connecting with service providers.
