Passion for compassion: Introducing USF students to public health opportunities through fellowships

Picture a group of passionate students stepping up to tackle society’s toughest challenges with creativity and compassion—meet the Public Health Fellows at the University of Saint Francis. Now in its second year, this program empowers these young leaders to address critical social issues through innovative solutions and hands-on service projects. By partnering with local organizations, these “fellows” gain practical experience while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve. This initiative fosters personal growth and instills a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to community well-being.

In the fall of 2024, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation provided a grant to the University of Saint Francis to support this fellowship experience for three students. We are proud to highlight these three inspiring fellows who are driving change through the program:

Jordan Guamingo, a Biology major, completed his fellowship at St. Joseph Parish, where he focused on raising nutritional awareness within the Hispanic community. “This project opened my eyes to the significant needs within the Hispanic community,” Jordan shares. “It showed me the importance of support from people who are genuinely dedicated to making a difference.”

Emma Dellinger, a Biology and Pre-Medicine major, served at Matthew 25, where she worked to improve patient compliance and advocate for accessible, high-quality healthcare. “Through this public health fellowship, I gained a deeper understanding of the barriers to quality healthcare,” Emma says. “I believe access to proper medical care is a fundamental human right.”

Darren Reyes, a Psychology major, completed his fellowship at Catholic Charities, making a positive impact on the health and well-being of teenage refugees and immigrants. “Working with refugees and immigrants was profoundly meaningful,” Darren reflects. “It connects to my father’s story and allows me to help others pursue a better life with opportunity and dignity.”
