The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation is thrilled to announce that Nyein Chan and Luz Ostrognai, both of Catholic Charities of Fort Wayne-South Bend, have been jointly selected as the 2025 recipients of the prestigious Raymond Rosenberger–Minette Baum Award. This annual honor, nominated by the Foundation’s Board and managed by PNC Financial Services through the Raymond Rosenberger Trust, recognizes individuals for their diligent and faithful service with exempt charitable organizations to alleviate human suffering, enhance quality of life for those afflicted by illness or injury, or promote wellness through prevention. Each recipient also receives a cash award to use as they wish, celebrating their extraordinary contributions in the community.

Nyein Chan: A Lifeline for Refugees

Nyein Chan, Director of Resettlement Services at Catholic Charities for over 21 years, brings a deeply personal perspective to his work. Having arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Burma, Nyein understands the challenges of navigating a new environment marked by language barriers, cultural shifts, and systemic hurdles. “I share what refugees have been through prior to their resettlement and the challenges they face when they arrive,” he says. “I enjoy helping individuals and families because I get to watch them grow over time.”

Nyein’s work focuses on ensuring refugees receive critical health services upon arrival in Fort Wayne. Many have spent years in refugee camps, facing malnutrition, infectious diseases, and mental health challenges like PTSD and depression. By collaborating with local healthcare providers, Nyein ensures refugees receive initial health screenings and follow-up treatments, regardless of their background. “We could not fulfill our mission without community support,” he emphasizes. “The vital role of community involvement is the success of the refugees and migrants we serve.” His efforts create a foundation for stability, dignity, and hope for some of society’s most vulnerable.

Luz Ostrognai: A Beacon for Immigrants

Luz Ostrognai, Immigration Director at Catholic Charities for 24 years, has dedicated her career to serving immigrant and refugee communities with compassion and professionalism. Originally from Colombia and a proud Fort Wayne resident, Luz combines her personal experience with an unwavering commitment to justice. “My favorite part of my work has been living out Catholic Charities’ mission to serve those in need as Christ calls us to do,” she shares. “To see the tears of joy and happiness on the faces of a family, who before was fearful and without a future or hope, is truly inspiring. It’s the ultimate reward.”

As Immigration Director, Luz provides holistic, trustworthy services to clients navigating the complex immigration process. For many, her work is a lifeline, offering hope for a better life, a safer home, or a brighter future for their children. “The immigration process is inherently based on hope,” Luz explains. “Our services provide opportunities for people to provide for themselves, fashion their purpose, and ultimately take command of their well-being.” By creating a safe, compassionate environment, Luz helps clients overcome fears of deportation, isolation, and past traumas, guiding them toward stability and dignity.
