Empowering lives through education: The Literacy Alliance

The Literacy Alliance believes that literacy changes lives, and their mission is to empower people and strengthen the community through education. By helping individuals attain an education, especially those who lack resources, they create pathways for growth and opportunity.
One inspiring example of this impact is Greyshel Cordero, a resilient young woman from Guatemala who embodies the spirit of hope and determination. Since her arrival six years ago, Greyshel has balanced two jobs—quality control at a local factory during the week and serving customers as a cashier at a store on weekends.
Greyshel’s journey is fueled by a lifelong passion for animals, rooted in her upbringing on a small farm in Guatemala. Inspired by her father’s guidance, she dreams of becoming a veterinarian. To achieve this goal, she started taking classes at The Literacy Alliance through their Project Connect English Language Learners program, which offers classes at various levels throughout the week. This program focuses on essential reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, allowing students to gain practical experience by applying these skills in real-life situations, all while being accessible free of charge to those who need it most.
The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation is proud to support The Literacy Alliance in their efforts to assist immigrants through programs such as Project Connect which helps individuals strengthen their English language skills, enhancing their ability to lead a full life and contribute to the strength of our community.
