Meet the Board: Bill Ehinger

2025-26 Chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors

Q: What inspires you about the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and their Foundress, Saint Katharina? Are there particular values or works that you find especially important?

I am inspired by their long term and consistent commitment to the marginalized in the communities they serve. Their mission in the Fort Wayne community has taken many forms over the years and has focused on the greatest need, not what was most popular. Perhaps a quote I saw at the PHJC chapel in Donaldson best captures my impression of their inspiration. The saying “We need to walk quietly, humbly with trust in God towards the future” (December 1872) is elegant and powerful, just like the Poor Handmaids!

Q: Please share a memorable interaction you have had with a grantee and their staff/clients.

While all the grantees are highly committed to meeting the needs of their clients, Matthew 25 is noteworthy in this regard. I have had the good fortune to meet a number of their patients in a variety of different settings. Universally these individuals expressed appreciation not only for the high-quality care they received but also their care was provided with respect and dignity.

Q: What do you enjoy most about serving on the St. Joe Foundation Board?

Without question what I enjoy most about serving on the Board is the interaction with the other Board members and staff. Everyone is aligned in their effort to being true to the mission of the foundation. Everyone, in their own way, seems to be quietly guided by the intention of the Poor Handmaids and the spirit of Saint Katharina.

Q: Tell us about an accomplishment in your professional or personal life that you are proud of.

I spent the majority of my professional career working in the management of independent medical practices in the Fort Wayne area. Over the course of my career, I had the good fortune to work with physicians and staff who were committed to a “patient first” form of practice. Being a part of these practices was personally very satisfying.
