Description: The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation was established in 1998 when the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ sold the St. Joseph Medical Center and reorganized the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation with a significant share of the proceeds. Proceeds from the Foundation’s endowment are redistributed as grants typically ranging from $5,000 to $35,000 to advance programs, projects and partnerships that improve the access to quality healthcare and the health of the poor and powerless of Allen County. Typically, only programs that can demonstrate that greater than 51% of their clients are very low income with health issues are considered for these grants.

The Foundation also considers these values of the Poor Handmaids as a part of its grant review process:
  • Respecting and valuing each person
  • Standing with the poor and powerless
  • Using our talents and resources to respond to the emerging needs of society
  • Nurturing leadership in our efforts to bring peace to the world

The proposed grant must be operated for the benefit of residents of Allen County, Indiana.

The Foundation will commit support on an annual basis only. Additional funding will be contingent upon program performance. Grant applications will not be accepted for building projects, elimination of deficits, support of political activities, individuals, or projects already completed. The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation shares the values of its sponsor and values the dignity of each person. The Foundation also follows the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. As such, it will not fund anything destructive of human life.
