The Carriage House: Embracing human dignity through community

The St. Joe Foundation is proud to support grantees such as Carriage House, who recently shared the story of one of their members, Marvin. Marvin’s journey highlights the profound positive impact that finding community can have on personal growth and sense of dignity. Since joining the Carriage House in 2007, Marvin has experienced a welcoming environment that values individuals beyond their mental health struggles.

Reflecting on his first visit, Marvin noted, “I was a little reserved. I slowly came out of my shell and started pitching in to help here, and it gave me a purpose. I started to feel like I could trust people here. I felt the compassion of the staff—they showed me that they cared about me.” This sense of belonging is central to the Carriage House’s mission.

The Carriage House exemplifies compassion and respect, fostering trust and connection among its members. By believing that each person has rights and responsibilities, they ensure everyone is respected and treated fairly, allowing individuals like Marvin to feel valued. He shared, “As the years have gone on, I have tried to help out because it makes me feel good to be a part of the community. I get cards and calls when they don’t see me.”

Through various programs and activities, the Carriage House promotes each individual’s unique contributions. Marvin added, “I love being there because there are lots of cheerful, happy-going people. If the Carriage House wasn’t here, I’d be sitting around watching TV all day—bored out of my mind.” He has been active in the Speaker’s Bureau, sharing his story, and enjoyed outside work and the weekend recreation program.

His involvement illustrates how the Carriage House empowers its members. He emphasized, “The Carriage House is a great group of people to be working with—overall, it just feels good to be part of a community. I really am grateful!”

The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation has supported the Carriage House for over 20 years, sharing the same beliefs in dignity, respect, and the importance of community. Marvin’s story serves as a reminder that when individuals are embraced for who they are, they can rediscover purpose and belonging, enriching both their lives and the community.
