Prenatal & Infant Care Luncheon: a year of connection and learning
As another successful year of the Prenatal and Infant Care Luncheon series wraps up, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation reflects on the incredible opportunities these events have provided for networking, learning, and collaboration among maternal and child health professionals. The final luncheon of the year focused on the critical issue of “Connecting Pregnant Women and Their Infants with Affordable Food and Nutrition,” bringing together experts and community members to address key health concerns.
One of the highlights of the event was a presentation by Dr. Lora Overton, who emphasized the vital role of quality nutrition for both mothers and infants, particularly in the context of rising obesity-related health issues. Dr. Overton shared troubling statistics on the prevalence of obesity and related diseases in the U.S.: approximately 32% of adults are overweight, and 42% are obese, with 74% of Americans facing weight-related health challenges. Additionally, nearly 10% of adults live with diabetes. The situation for children is equally concerning, with 19% of children now classified as obese compared to just 5% four decades ago. Dr. Overton highlighted how these conditions contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, and a higher risk of developing serious health issues such as heart disease and cancer.
Jackie Schenkel, Interim Senior Director of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, provided valuable updates on WIC benefits and breastfeeding support. She also introduced the Breastfeeding Mobile Unit, a resource aimed at assisting breastfeeding mothers and their newborns, ensuring they receive the support needed for optimal health.
The event featured a panel discussion with representatives from local organizations committed to supporting pregnant women and families. This provided an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the affordable resources and services available in the community, further fostering a sense of collaboration and connection.
The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation is deeply grateful for the ongoing support and active participation of the community throughout the year. As we look ahead to the upcoming year, we are excited to continue hosting these enriching luncheons, which provide valuable resources and opportunities to improve the well-being of mothers and infants in the region.
Quotes from attendees:
“It’s always a great lunch and an encouraging time to meet with like-minded professionals. I appreciate that I learn about something else in the community at every one that I attend, which I can refer our clients to.”
“I value all the organizations they are looking to support one another. If we have similar missions-we are not competing, we are simply working together to help families in need and spread important, valuable information that inspires families to live brighter, healthier lives.”
“Well-prepared and thoughtful speakers.”
