Helping non-English speakers find their voice
Grantee spotlight: The Literacy Alliance
The Literacy Alliance (TLA) has been a force for good since the 1960s, helping individuals learn, grow, and thrive through language support. One of TLA’s primary missions is supporting immigrants through English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and citizenship programs, equipping adults with the skills to speak, read, and write in English. These essential programs enable participants to secure employment, pursue education, and build stronger community ties.
TLA’s work deeply aligns with the values of the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which uphold the dignity of every person and support those who are most vulnerable. By offering free language and citizenship classes, TLA honors the inherent dignity of each individual and provides opportunities for its students to flourish in Allen County.
Project Connect is one of TLA’s fastest-growing programs and is on track to become the largest offering of the organization. In Allen County alone, approximately 40,000 residents live in households where English is not the primary language, with over 7,000 of these individuals living in poverty. Through Project Connect, TLA helps these community members access pathways to economic stability and fuller participation in society. The program’s emphasis on dignified, accessible education reflects the Catholic Social Teaching of promoting the common good by lifting individuals so they can contribute fully to their communities.
To support Project Connect’s growth, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation awarded TLA a $25,000 grant in the spring of 2024. The Foundation proudly partners with TLA to advance our shared values of providing compassionate, accessible education to empower immigrants and build a stronger, more inclusive community. Through this partnership, the Foundation strengthens solidarity with those facing language barriers, ensuring everyone has the tools to lead a life of dignity and purpose.
